One Year After Hurricanes Helene and Milton: Stories of Resilience

Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused widespread damage across Florida and the Southeastern United States, leaving thousands of families with damaged homes and uncertain futures. Over the past year, many have faced the challenge of rebuilding their lives—repairing homes, navigating assistance programs, and regaining a sense of stability.

With guidance and support from SBP and our partners, families are making steady progress.

Meet Laura, Anthony, Angela, Harry—SBP clients whose journeys illustrate the courage and resilience behind every home rebuilt and every family restored.

Meet Laura Maidenberg

Nine months after Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Laura’s home was still uninhabitable. SBP helped her navigate the FEMA appeals process and secure the maximum FEMA funding for which she was eligible. Our team also rebuilt her house — repairing plumbing and gas lines, remediating mold, installing insulation and drywall, and clearing debris. In July, Laura finally returned home during a Welcome Home celebration with volunteers and the SBP team.

Meet Anthony Lawson

After Hurricane Helene, SBP repaired the home Anthony built with his own two hands, and installed a FORTIFIED roof built to withstand high winds and hurricane conditions. For Anthony, SBP’s support was not only about shingles or boards. It was also about the peace of knowing his home can keep him safe and endure future storms.

Meet Angela Bristol

Angela Bristol’s home already had water damage and a leaky roof, thanks to Hurricane Ian two years ago. When Hurricane Milton tore through Florida, it did not spare Angela’s home. SBP helped Angela rebuild, using storm-resilient construction standards and installing a FORTIFIED roof to withstand future storms. The result has been life-changing.

Meet Harry and Lorraine Mitchell

The flooding from Hurricane Milton destroyed the Mitchell’s air conditioner and the drywall inside their home. Repair costs continued to pile up, and Harry worked seven days a week just to stay afloat. That’s when SBP stepped in to help him salvage what he could and restore the home he had already poured so much into.
