NEW ORLEANS — SBP has received a $1 million grant from Farmers® Insurance to support its service to disaster-impacted communities, continuing a partnership rooted in long-term recovery and resilience that began in 2011 following the historic Joplin tornado. The grant will strengthen SBP’s ability to engage volunteers and expand service capacity across its recovery and preparedness efforts, including AmeriCorps opportunities, FEMA appeals assistance, construction and rebuilding services, and disaster preparedness education in communities facing elevated risk.

SBP’s work in communities relies on people in service of all kinds—including corporate volunteers, skilled partners, AmeriCorps members, and individuals who live and work in the places SBP serves. Together, they support homeowners through preparedness, recovery, and rebuilding efforts that often extend years beyond a disaster’s immediate aftermath.

“Service and volunteerism are at the heart of everything SBP does,” said Carol Markowitz, Chief Executive Officer of SBP. “Farmers® long-standing partnership makes it possible for us to engage more people in meaningful service—supporting homeowners as they recover, strengthening communities, and helping families prepare for whatever comes next.”

Since the partnership began, Farmers Insurance has combined strategic funding with hands-on volunteer engagement to support SBP’s mission. Over the past 15 years, more than 2,000 Farmers volunteers have contributed over 64,000 service hours supporting recovery efforts after major disasters, including Hurricanes Sandy, Harvey and Helene. Their service has ranged from rebuilding homes and supporting construction projects to providing skills-based training and creating “welcome home” cards for families returning to rebuilt homes.

Through more than $12 million in total contributions and sustained volunteer engagement, Farmers has helped SBP support more than 4,500 disaster-impacted families nationwide while strengthening long-term community resilience.

“As we celebrate 15 years of shared impact, Farmers Insurance is proud to continue supporting SBP and its mission to help families recover faster and communities rebuild stronger after disaster strikes,” said Courtney Vandermause, Director of Corporate Citizenship for Farmers Insurance. “This grant, along with the dedication of Farmers volunteers, helps empower SBP to deliver essential services and critical resources when and where they’re needed most.”

Founded in 2006 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, SBP works to shorten the time between disaster and recovery for under-resourced communities. The organization focuses on rebuilding and strengthening homes for low-income homeowners while helping communities build the capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

SBP’s homeowner recovery services include FEMA appeals assistance, no-cost bridge loans, and resilient construction, including IBHS FORTIFIED roofing. Through its Advisory Services team and Resilience Fellows, SBP also provides training, technical assistance, and capacity-building support to help communities reduce risk and secure recovery funding.
