Building the Way Home for Disaster Survivors

The importance of home has been at the heart of SBP’s work since we were founded in St. Bernard Parish in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2006. We partner with homeowners to rebuild their homes efficiently and resiliently after a disaster.

How Our Rebuilding Program Works

No matter who you are, home is about much more than just a roof and four walls. After a disaster, survivors need prompt, predictable recovery assistance to minimize suffering—and restore dignity and hope.

SBP’s rebuilding program rebuilds damaged homes for disaster survivors, prioritizing those with limited income, including families with young children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, veterans, and people who are underinsured or uninsured. Leveraging the power of reputable local contractors, dedicated AmeriCorps members, and service volunteers—and the efficiency of the Toyota Production System—SBP scales rebuilding programs to serve communities in need. Homeowners benefit from a single point of contact throughout the process, ensuring clear and continuous communication.

Creating Affordable Housing Opportunities

SBP’s Opportunity Housing Program makes the dream of affordable homeownership a reality for low- to moderate-income families. We build high-quality homes for sale or rent at an affordable price, utilizing financial assistance from local government partners for down payments and closing costs. SBP’s Opportunity Housing program builds homes that are both energy-efficient and resilient to storms, empowering families to build home equity and save money.

We provide affordable rental units to low- and moderate-income renters in New Orleans, with future plans to expand to other communities.

Testimonials

"I have prayed so much for this moment. My mom is looking down at me from heaven, and I know she is happy. Her home will be beautiful once again. I know many great and beautiful things will happen in this home once it is fixed. Thank you for being my angels."

Sara Rosa De Jesus (Client),

"I don’t know how to put into words the level of gratitude I have and the amount of appreciation for this BIG blessing I am receiving. Maybe I’ll figure out between now and the time I get home. I am also looking forward to meeting you and everyone else involved to be able to tell you in person how much this is truly appreciated."

Davilon Carter (client)

Houston, TX; excerpt from a letter written to our Community Engagement Manager in Houston, Kaitlyn Perez, upon project approval

"[SBP] really did change my life. It gave me a new outlook and a new lease on life because I was able to finally move forward from something that had been holding me back for years. You don’t realize what an impact your shelter makes on you, but it is a huge part of your emotional and mental well-being…and it really just completely gave my life a turnaround because I was really stuck, and I had been stuck for quite a while."

"What you’ve done is not just a good deed, you’ve made an impact on a fellow human’s life, and you don’t know what it’s like until you’re on the receiving end. It’s phenomenal."

Bill Roach (Client),

"Having a secure home gives people hope. It allows them to recalculate their future, no matter what their circumstances are and what the destruction looks like. It struck me that every time you improve someone's life in some way it provides hope, and all people should have some hope of a safe and secure family."

Sharing your experiences, your resources, pricing information, and documentation was just what was needed to jumpstart our work.
